Chrome extension

Text to speech for every tab.

The AllReads Chrome extension puts a Listen button on every page. Press it and the article is read aloud right where you found it, in a natural-sounding voice — or save it to your library and listen later.

How it works

Three steps, then just listen.

  1. 1

    Add it to Chrome

Install AllReads from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to your toolbar.

  2. 2

    Sign in once

The extension uses your AllReads account, so your voice, speed and library carry over.

  3. 3

    Press Listen

Use the button on the page, the right-click menu, or ⌥R (Alt+R on Windows).

What it does

Built for listening, not just reading out.

Listen on any page

An in-page player reads the article aloud where you are, with a voice picker beside it.

Save for later

One click — or ⌥L — sends the page to your library to listen to on any device.

Screenshot to read

Drag a box over an image, a PDF or any text you can’t select, and hear it read aloud (⌥⇧R).

Shortcuts you can change

Listen, save and screenshot each have a keyboard shortcut, and every one can be rebound.

Save buttons where you browse

A save button on X, Reddit, Substack, Hacker News and Indie Hackers posts — switch each site off if you prefer.

Nothing read until you ask

The extension doesn’t read or send a page’s content unless you press one of its buttons.

Questions

Fair questions, honest answers.

Is the extension free?

The extension is free to install. Listening and saving use your AllReads account, which is a paid plan with a 14-day money-back guarantee. You can hear the voices first in the free demo, with no account.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

Listen to the page is ⌥R (Alt+R on Windows and Linux), save to your library is ⌥L (Alt+L), and Screenshot to read is ⌥⇧R (Alt+Shift+R). All three can be changed.

Can it read PDFs and images in the browser?

Yes. Screenshot to read lets you drag a box over any part of a page — a PDF open in Chrome, an image, a slide — and the text inside it is recognised and read aloud.

Does it read everything I browse?

No. The extension does nothing with a page until you press Listen, Save or Screenshot to read. Only then does it read that page’s article text, or the area you selected.

Can I read a selection instead of the whole page?

Use Screenshot to read: drag a box around just the part you want, and only that is read aloud.

Which voices can I use?

Thirteen AllReads voices come with every plan, in American and British English, with no API key and nothing billed by the word. If you already pay OpenAI or xAI, add your own key to use their voices too, billed by them at their price with nothing added on top.

How fast can it read?

Anywhere from 0.5× to 3×, adjustable while it plays.

Where does what I save go?

Into your AllReads library, which syncs between desktop and phone and remembers your place in every article.
